The Summer Palace – Beijing



Have you heard about Yihe Yuan? This is the Chinese name for Summer Palace which means gardens of nurtured harmony. It is such incredible name, isn’t it?

The Summer Palace is not the actual physical palace you imagine. This place is kind of imperial garden and lake. The Summer Palace with the 2.2 square km of Kunming Lake, is a great view for everyone. The 25% of this location provides the welcoming gardens, temples and palaces for the emperor’s family.

The Summer Palace consists of 3 main areas: the Longevity Hill area, the Court area and the Kunming Lake area.

Longevity Hill Area is the soil dug out from the excavation. This is the manmade lake with the sophisticated 60 meters high. There is the Temple of Buddhist Virtue on the top of the hill. The hill also holds some incredible buildings like temples, gates, and highly decorated halls. 

The court area consists of the palace buildings where the imperial family stayed and held some important family events.

The larger part of the Summer Palace is the Kunming Lake area where you can see the bronze ox, nanhu island, and the 17 arch bridge that connects Nanhu Island to the mainland.
