It is named as “forbidden” since people were only allowed to access and leave the city with the emperor’s permission. The older name of Chinese “cheng” means walled city that is why the word “city” included then.
The forbidden city is divided into two main parts, the outer and inner court. The outer court was used by the people for ceremonial purposes and the inner court to be more private that was used for the house of emperors and the family and also the offices.
   
The opening hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm during the low season (November to March) and 8:30 am to 5:00 pm during the high season (April to October). Make sure you book your ticket in advance so that you will not meet some obstacles in your destination.
