I thought O was Surfing with Sharks…
The time was around 5:30 in the morning and dawn was about to break. One could hear the sound of surf crashing at the shoreline merely fifty metres from where I lay, comfortably in my bed. I recalled the assurance I'd made myself the previous day but my light headache from drinking too much beer had me finding excuses. So I slept a tad more...
It's guilt which gradually helped me get up and dress in my swimwear. Middle age and my tendency for a beer was obviously showing; mainly around the hips. Also I need to get rid of cellulite which is starting to show on my upper thighs – something I need to deal with soon. And so, in spite of the mild thumping in my head, i set off, surfboard under my arm, down to the beach. Next an astonishing thing occurred.
I took my surfboard out to sea about one humdred and fifty metres and sat in the tranquil area just beyond the break and watched the sun rise over the horizon. I gazed to the left and after that to my right, there was clearly no-one else in the vacinity. My heart skipped a beat as my mind turned to what might be swimming beneath the surface. It is strange how we have a tendency to feel secure when there are others around; sort of like birds in a group or maybe a herd of deer. And then, only a metre to my right, it appeared. There was a loud noise and it lifted out of the water.
I almost jumped out of my skin! My heart was pumping and my system of self preservation kicked in. The high-speed shot of adrenaline straight into my system raised the sensory faculties. After that I realized what it was.
A breathtaking dolphin and her little newborn rose smoothly from the sea no more than a metre from where I sat and then gradually re-entered the water and moved immediately beneath my board. I observed as they continued their trip away from me. I was left feeling a massive relief that i would be safe and also awe at the magnificence of this scene. There is no way I could explain this to you in a way that proficiently communicates my experience. No amount of storytelling can convey the experience. So I can only ask you to visualize what it would have been like.
Approximately two hours later I went back to our beach side apartment and joined my family for breakfast and my typical dose of my best probiotic (to settle my stomach). Our holiday accommodation Cotton Tree destination is a retreat from the stress of everyday life. It is also a location where you are able to experience the natural beauty of this part of the world.
If you should ever vacation to the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Queensland, lookup for holiday accommodation Cotton Tree on the internet and you can expect to find many places to stay. I encourage you get up early enough in the morning and wander along the beach, you might be fortuitous to see dolphins frolicking in the surf. Maybe you will see the same dolphins that gave me such a scare. It does take some effort but, you won't be sorry you did.
