For a short break or a family vacation, Yorkeys Knob in qld Australia is the place

The popular Australian beach resort, Yorkeys Knob, is just 13 km away from Cairns, the capital of Far North Queensland. Together with Machans Beach and Holloways Beach, it belongs to a trio of lively beach suburbs. Swimming conditions at Yorkeys are best at the north end of Sims Esplanade. This is a popular area for wind-surfers and kite-surfers.

The beach is patrolled in the summer months by lifeguards and it has a stinger net to protect bathers from the infamous box jellyfish. To ensure your safety, the lifeguards flag the safe swimming areas so make sure you swim between the flags. There have been some fateful drownings around the rocks a short distance away.

If you're keen on the sun and the sea, you'll be in your element at Yorkeys. In addition to the gorgeous beach, there are public toilets and showers, as well as picnic and barbecue areas. The beachfront looks exactly like a picture postcard and is lined with coconut palms, beach almonds, ballnuts, and she-oak casuarinas. There's a lavish clubhouse at the Half Moon Marina which offers alfresco dining under a massive covered deck.

The view from the bay area is magnificent and stretches out to the Coral Sea. The renowned Driftaways Restaurant serves everything from octopus salad to potato wedges with a scrumptious sweet chili sauce. The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, while on Sundays it serves a gourmet breakfast on the deck from 8 to 10am.

Tucked in a cove near the Half Moon Marina is the Yorkeys Knob Boating Club which welcomes visitors. You'll be able to enjoy a bistro meal in the open air while watching the many activities on the marina. There are berths for 200 boats that can accommodate vessels up to 30 meters in length.

Arguably Australia's best attraction, the Great Barrier Reef, is near Yorkeys Knob. It is possible to swim, dive, snorkel, or wind-surf and see spectacular under-the-sea wonders as well as an array of marine life. For those who can't dive, snorkeling provides the best alternative. You will discover sections of shallow water where you are able to easily see the beauty below.

The local golf club is the perfect place for bird-watching. It is possible to see bush stone curlews, masked lapwings, rainbow lorikeets, sea eagles, and kingfishers. A huge colony of flying foxes has set up home near the 12th and 13th holes. In the early evenings, they come out to find food. By day, they create an unbelievable noise while hanging upside down from mangrove trees.

Many of Cairns main tourist attractions are minutes from Yorkeys. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is a memorable experience. This spans an area of 7.5 km with unforgettable views of the pristine tropical rainforests. After gliding over the trees, the cableway descends into the heart of a forest where you can take pictures and enjoy refreshments before going back to the top. There are plenty of Yorkeys Knob accommodation facilities to suit any budget. These include marine holiday units, holiday apartments, villas, penthouses, resorts, and several very affordable 4-star hotels.
